BOOK DESCRIPTION

Agency theory involves what is known as the principal-agent problem, a topic widely discussed in economics, management, and business ethics today. It is a characteristic of nearly all modern business firms that the principals (the owners and shareholders) are not the same people as the agents (the managers who run the firms for the principals). This creates situations in which the goals of the principals may not be the same as the agents--the principals will want growth in profits and stock price, while agents may want growth in salaries and positions in the hierarchy. The fourth volume in the Ruffin Series in Business, this book explores the ethical consequences of agency theory through contributions by ethicists, economists, and management theorists.Bowie, Norman E. is the author of 'Ethics and Agency Theory: An Introduction' with ISBN 9780195067989 and ISBN 0195067983.

Agency theory in corporate governance is an extension of the agency theory discussed above. It relates to a specific type of agency relationship that exists between the shareholders and directors/management of a company. The shareholders, true owners of the corporation, as principals, elect the executives to act and take decisions on their behalf. The aim is to represent the views of the ... The standard theory offers an account of what is, arguably, the most central kind of agency: intentional agency (and the kind of unintentional agency that derives from it; see section 2). This can be distinguished from higher or more refined kinds of agency, such as self-controlled, autonomous, and free agency, and it can be distinguished from more basic kinds of agency that do not require the ... The use of agency theory remains highly controversial among business ethicists. While some regard it as an essential tool for analyzing and understanding the recent spate of corporate ethics scandals, others argue that these scandals might not even have occurred had it not been for the widespread teaching of agency theory in business schools. |a Principals, agents, and ethics / J.
